The East Neuk Foodbank is a very small but active group of volunteers based in the Anstruther area covering the East Neuk villages. The group have a very prominent local presence using traditional marketing materials (posters, press releases, info leaflets, etc.) and an active Facebook page for reaching out to those that need to access there services.
Despite the group doing really well to market their work within the East Neuk communities, reaching out to their user base and supporters, one area that was neglected was a dedicated website which can then help provide a useful focal point for funders and target those that do not use social media to consume information.
Working closely with Cllr Linda Holt and Graham Lang, the three of us pulled our resources together to donate web hosting, domain name and build the volunteers a website. Graham and Linda have agreed to fund the domain name and web hosting indefinitely so that the group will never have to worry about renewal fees. As for the web design aspect, another donation with ongoing support for the volunteers in using and maintaining their site.
Now for the geeky part. The site is completely responsive and lightweight with no bloated scripts slowing down page load. The site was developed on the WordPress platform. Photographs were taken in Anstruther to be included in an interactive slider to liven up the pages. Interactive maps were included on each page so that users unfamiliar with the area can locate the foodbank quickly and get directions.
There is sometimes misconceptions about the users of foodbanks and the reasons that individuals and families can find themselves at foodbanks, so it was important to include local and national stats for foodbanks to try and give site visitors a better understanding of the multiple issues that may arise in a persons life that has driven them towards using a foodbank.
