SIMD Data for Benarty, Cardenden, Lochgelly and Lumphinnans

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) measures levels of deprivation in communities across Scotland, focussing on seven domains: current income, employment, health, education, skills and training, housing, geographic access, and crime. The purpose of the SIMD is to provide a tool to local authorities, Scottish Government and other government bodies in Scotland so that local and national Government action can be targetted in the areas which need it the most. Below is the latest SIMD data (2016) for the new Central Fife political ward (Lochgelly, Cardenden and Benarty) which will return four councillors (4th May 2017) to serve our local communities.

SIMD Data – Quick Overview

  • Areas in the Benarty ward are in the 10% – 30% most deprived areas in Scotland
  • Areas in the Cardenden ward are in the 20% – 40% most deprived areas in Scotland. Jamphlers area is in the 30% of least deprived areas in Scotland
  • Areas in Lochgelly are in the top 10% – 40% of most deprived areas in Scotland. New Farm Vales is in the least 30% of most deprived areas. Sir James Black Gait and new developments in Lochgelly are in the least 20% of most deprived areas.
  • Lumphinnans is in the top 10% of most deprived areas in Scotland

Unconditional Basic Income – Fife Pilot Scheme

With Fife Council investigating the possibility of test piloting Unconditional Basic Income over a two year period somewhere within the Kingdom of Fife. Introducing the pilot scheme across the entire political ward of Lochgelly, Cardenden and Benarty would instantly alleviate child poverty and fuel poverty.

A map produced in 2012 by the Child Poverty Action Group showed that in the current Lochs Ward it was estimated that 30% of children (914) are living in poverty, while in the current Lochgelly and Cardenden Ward 29% of children are living in poverty (788).

In March 2014, research by ChangeWorks and Fife Council (Fuel Poverty Mapping of Fife) showed:

Lochgelly east is the 3rd highest fuel poor area with 38.60% estimated in fuel poverty. Ballingry is the 46th most fuel poor in Fife with an estimate of 33.17%. Lochgelly West and Lumphinnans (datazone: S01002777) 48th highest fuel poor area with an estimate of 29.47%, and Lochgelly West and Lumphinnans (datazone: S01002762) 50th highest fuel poor area with an estimate of 35.08%.

With the continued onslaught of austerity measures attacking the poorest and most vulnerable in society, we need our communities to come together at the grass roots level, to find strength through mutual support and to create the unity to oppose austerity and the deep poverty it creates. Alle

Testing Unconditional Basic Income across the entire political ward would require a strong commitment from the Scottish Government, Fife Council and Councillors. If approved it would reduce the stresses of poverty and alleviate some of the local issues of deprivation, giving breathing space to develop community capacity building projects that will make our communities more resilient against future planned cuts.
